There is still little agreement on what the article system comprises of and how we can describe their meanings and functions of articles in the theoretical and practical research. Therefore successful instructional outcomes are rarely accomplished. In this study I propose that the category of articles should include a/an, the, unstressed some and any, as well as two invisible articles: an indefinite zero article and a definite null article. Furthermore, the meanings of these articles can be described and understood based on various features they employ regarding the three main dimensions: DEFINITE/INDEFINITE, COUNT/MASS, and EXTENSIVITY. The COUNT/MASS dimension subsumes three binary systems of ±divisible, ±merge-able and ±homogeneous. These dichotomies enable the learner to distinguish a unit entity from a mass entity. A traditional SINGULAR/PLURAL distinction is treated simply as a sub-dimension of COUNT. The EXTENSIVITY dimension distinguishes qualitative articles of a/an and unstressed some from a categorical article of zero article. The DEFINITE/INDEFINITE dimension is explained by the two binary systems: ±locatable and ±inclusive.
